Assessing Prognosis in Uveal Melanoma.

BACKGROUND Because uveal melanoma is the most common primary malignant intraocular tumor in adults and carries a significant risk of metastases, which are mostly unresponsive to available systemic therapy, researchers have been searching for prognostic indicators to identify patients at increased risk for developing such metastasis. METHODS The purpose of this study is to describe recent adva...

PRAME as an Independent Biomarker for Metastasis in Uveal Melanoma.

PURPOSE Uveal melanoma (UM) can be classified by gene expression profiling (GEP) into Class 1 (low metastatic risk) and Class 2 (high metastatic risk), the latter being strongly associated with mutational inactivation of the tumor suppressor BAP1. Nevertheless, a small percentage of Class 1 tumors give rise to metastatic disease. The purpose of this study was to identify biomarkers of metastasi...

Cell cycling and prognosis in uveal melanoma.

Uveal melanoma cell cycling, quantified by bromodeoxyuridine (BrdUrd)-labeling index and mitotic index, is predictive of tumor-related mortality. Serial sections from 36 formalin-fixed melanoma specimens were labeled with BrdUrd and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. All tumors were assessed for the area of highest cell cycling activity and counts for mitotic figures and BrdUrd labeling were p...

Potential Role of Soluble c-Met as a New Candidate Biomarker of Metastatic Uveal Melanoma.

IMPORTANCE Conventional melanoma serum biomarkers (S100 and lactate dehydrogenase [LDH]) perform poorly in patients with uveal melanoma, and the search for new biomarkers is needed. A high expression of the oncoprotein c-Met in primary uveal melanoma is associated with metastatic progression, and c-Met is released as a soluble ectodomain through ADAM10- and ADAM17-mediated cleavage, suggesting ...

PC-10 as a predictor of prognosis after antigen retrieval in posterior uveal melanoma.

PURPOSE The immunoexpression of the PC-10 monoclonal antibody for the proliferating cell nuclear antigen is claimed to have prognostic value in diverse tumors, but previous data on posterior uveal melanoma are conflicting. The aim of the current study was to investigate further the potential value of the PC-10 antibody in predicting tumor-related death after enucleation for posterior uveal mela...
